Sleep Week: Swaddles and Sleep Sacks

So…I started Sleep Week in August, but then was sidelined with lack of sleep due to our vacation and a month or two of teething wakefulness. If you missed the first review, please check it out. We asked our Panel of Guessperts their thoughts and experiences with sound machines and sleep soothers, and what worked for them.

So…Take Two: It’s Sleep Week again here at Little Brim Baby! Each day will cover a different topic for infant sleep gear.  I asked our Guessperts a few questions regarding their sleep sacks and swaddles for today’s post–let’s dig in and see what everyone replied. I will boldface every other entry for ease of readability and post links when available. Feel free to leave your own review in the comments.

We’re asking our moms what has worked for them. Did they use sleep sacks? Swaddles? What do they recommend? Hopefully this can help new moms figure out what they want to use for their little ones, since any clarity in decision-making in the first few foggy months can be so helpful!

Age of child: 11 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Both

What brand(s)? HALO sleep sacks with Velcro in the beginning and a lighter-weight sleeveless one once baby was older in the spring. Carter’s long sleeved ones in the winter.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? In the beginning the Velcro swaddle blankets and swaddle sleep sacks definitely worked better than a receiving blanket for weeks 3-12. After that, the sleep sacks were wonderful just because I wasn’t worried about suffocating from a blanket and baby wasn’t kicking them off.

Do you recommend it? Yes.

Favorite pajamas for baby? Carter’s zip-up footie pjs.

Age of child: Two children, older is 22 months, younger is 3 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Only with younger. Older hated to be swaddled (still won’t have his arms inside a towel).

What brand(s)? I tried a number of them, but stuck to the HALO swaddle, now use a variety of sleep sacks.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Yes, and it was the only one my little Houdini could not escape from.

Do you recommend it? Yes.

Favorite pajamas for baby? For infants, I love Carter’s footed pjs, reasonably priced, and I love zips, not snaps. For toddlers I advise no footed pjs if you have wooden stairs–the feet get slippery and it’s horrid to watch them slide uncontrollably down them!!!

Age of child: 6 months to now (2.5 years)

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Yes.

What brand(s)? Summer Infant SwaddleMe

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Yes.

Do you recommend it? Yes, but my kids quickly outgrew these. Good for the first three months though.

Favorite pajamas for baby? N/A

Age of child: 8 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Yes, swaddled him as a newborn and switched to sleep sacks after.

What brand(s)? Swaddled in any blanket and then HALO sleep sacks.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Yes, when swaddled as newborn but now we only use sleep sacks.

Do you recommend it? Yes – I like the fleece sleep sacks.

Favorite pajamas for baby? Carter’s zip-up footies.

Age of child: 4 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? No! Baby likes to have arms and legs free.

What brand(s)? We tried all of them.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? The SwaddleMe helped him sleep maybe 2 nights when he was really young, maybe 8 weeks old.

Do you recommend it? It’s worth a try!

Favorite pajamas for baby? To keep baby warm we used footed pjs and an aden and anais blanket. At 4 months, with rolling over, we use mostly footed pjs. Most of our pjs were gifts or hand-me-downs, Carter’s, Old Navy

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Yes, until baby was around 4 months old.

What brand(s)? Miracle Blanket

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Yes.

Do you recommend it? Yes.

Favorite pajamas for baby? Anything without buttons or snaps. I loved the sleep sacks that you could just pull up and diaper change without interrupting much sleep in the middle of the night.

Age of child: 8 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? Yes.

What brand(s)? The Summer Infant SwaddleMe for the first month, then the HALO sleep sacks contained arms better until around month 3. From month 3-4 we still used the HALO, but Velcroed the bands with his arms out, but he still had the security around his waist. From month 4 to now at month 8, we use the aden and anais sleep sacks.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Yes!

Do you recommend it? Yes!

Favorite pajamas for baby? Carter’s zip-up footies or Hanna Andersson footless.

Age of child: 8 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? We tried the swaddle, but gave up around 4 weeks in. We used numerous sleepsacks during the first 3-4 months.

What brand(s)? Aden + Anais swaddle blankets, Miracle Blanket, SwaddleMe swaddlers. Carter’s, Vitamins Baby, Baby Gap brands of sleepsacks

Did it work (help baby sleep)? Baby was never a fan of being swaddled, but the Miracle Blanket was the only thing that couldn’t be escaped. The sleepsacks were great. We bed-share, so in the winter, the sleepsacks kept baby warm enough to not have to worry about keeping blankets on or off of them at night. Baby has always been a kicker though, and would work feet up inside the sleepsack until they were stuck up by the chest! So there was always some untangling that needed to be done several times a night.

Do you recommend it? I recommend the Miracle Blanket – it’s worth the money, but they can often be found cheap at consignment shops! I also recommend sleepsacks for bed-sharing babies and for wintertime.

Favorite pajamas for baby? We loved Carter’s footed pjs during the first 4 months (was in 9m size clothes at 4m!). However, baby’s feet grew too big for footed pjs really fast, so those were no longer an option after 4/5 months.

Age of child: 8 months

Question: Did you use a swaddle or sleep sack with your infant? We swaddled up to age 3 months and used a sleep sack until recently.

What brand(s)? Aden & Anais swaddle blankets and Halo sleep sacks.

Did it work (help baby sleep)? The swaddle was ok until baby turned into a wild child and liked to sleep arms out and legs spread apart.

Do you recommend it? Aden & Anais I could not live without and will buy many more for baby #2.

Favorite pajamas for baby? I love the Carters zip up.  We don’t have specific pj’s, I’ll sometimes do pants, short sleeve onesie under a long sleeved onesie or an actual sleeper.  We can’t use sleep sacks anymore because baby sleeps like a skydiver and the restriction of the sack interrupted sleep.
